Nolan was born a healthy 7 pounds 9 ounces of December 2nd 2010. He was our third special bundle of joy. We had a 4 year old daughter and a 2 year old son.
Our family was complete. We were ready for all the action a third child could bring. Boy we were wrong. Nolan was diagnosed on October 11th 2011 with AML (acute Myeloid Leukemia) at the tender age of 10 months. Which is very rare for his age.
We were admitted right away and his treatments began within days. Our heads were spinning and we were in full panic mode. But there was no other option for us. We were going to fight; fight for his life and our family.
Nolan suffered through 3 rounds of chemotherapy from October to February.
He relapsed the weekend we were released from the hospital in February of 2012.
A special radiation program was then put in place, as Nolan's cancer was stuck in his skin. Nolan underwent 2 weeks of radiation and a bone marrow transplant on May 3rd 2012 (from my older son's umbilical cord blood).
Nolan was released from the hospital late June of 2012.
Today he is in remission!!!
Nolan has several side effects from the toxic treatments such as: abnormal bone growth, cataract, dental and growth delays and other issues....
But he is healthy (ish). He is active and enjoys all the same things a typical 9 year old does. Soccer, videogames and watching movies.
Nolan never asks why him? He never pitied himself. He just lives with it and fights it every day. We look forward to the day when cancer is a word of the past.
